Waterford United have announced they will be hosting a friendly match against a Liverpool FC XI which will take place on Wednesday, July 20th at the RSC (KO 7.45pm).

Liverpool are travelling to Ireland for a two-match tour, with a match already scheduled against Bray Wanderers at the Carlisle Grounds on Monday, July 18th.

This will be the first time the English side have faced Waterford United despite a large contingent of Irish players lining out for the Reds over the year, in particular Waterford's own Jim Beglin who made 98 appearances during the eighties.

Waterford United’s vice chairman Sam White was delighted that they could welcome such a prestigious club to Ireland’s south-east. "It will be a great, historic, occasion for Waterford United, and hopefully a great boost for the city also. Liverpool has huge support throughout the country, and it's a great opportunity for Reds fans from all over the South East, and further afield, to come and see the Anfield stars of the future."

A Liverpool XI has visited Ireland a few times in recent history having played Galway United and Bohemians over the past two years. A young Bohemians side suffered a 2-0 defeat at Dalymount Park in 2009 when Krisztian Nemeth and Daniel Pacheco both scored in the final minutes. Galway had a bit more luck and they scraped a 1-0 victory over the Scousers at Terryland Park a year later.

Tickets will go on sale next Friday night, July 1st, at the RSC when Waterford face Longford Town in the Irish First Division and will be priced at €15. There will also be a limited number of concessionary tickets priced at €10 available for children, OAPs and people out of work.
