Lloyd Buckley added to Athlone squad

Athlone Town have continued their impressive raft of off-season signings at Lissywoolen with the signing of former Drogheda United star Lloyd Buckley.

22-year-old Buckley joins the First Division basement strugglers of the past two years having spent the last few years of his career at United Park.

He made his debut for the Boynesiders in 2015. After impressing manager Johnny McDonnell, Buckly began to slowly cement his name in the Drogheda United first-team squad with some impressive showings as the Drogs ultimately suffered relegation at the end of the season.

Having impressed during the 2015 campaign, the former St Kevin’s Boys schoolboy played a pivotal role in the Drogs unlikely Playoff success of 2016 before making 12 appearances in the club’s eventual return to the second tier in 2017.

A defender by trade, Buckley will be a welcome addition to Terry Butler’s ranks at Athlone who will undoubtedly be looking to improve defensively after conceding 81 goals last season with no clean sheets for a beleaguered defensive rear-guard in Co. Westmeath.
