Dave Mulcahy signs for Drogheda United

Drogheda United have announced the signing of veteran defender Dave Mulcahy on a short-term deal until the end of the season.

The 39-year-old centre-back, who has league experience with Kilkenny City, St. Patrick’s Athletic, Cork City, Bray Wanderers and Bohemians, joins the Boynesiders following his release from Waterford in July.

Mulcahy’s League of Ireland career started at his hometown club Kilkenny City in 1999 before he moved to Waterford for the first time in 2003.

Two years at Waterford were followed by a year and a half at St. Patrick’s Athletic before he returned to Waterford for the second half of the 2007 season.

Mulcahy then moved to Cork where he made just two league appearances before leaving in August 2008 following a bust up with then manager Alan Mathews.

The 2009 season saw Mulcahy start regularly for Bray Wanderers before he returned to St. Patrick’s Athletic for a further two seasons.

Bohemians was the next destination for the Kilkenny man in 2012 when he signed for Aaron Callaghan’s side. Mulcahy was made Bohemian’s captain in late 2013 after Owen Heary took over as player-manager of the Gypsies.

The defender briefly returned to Cork City ahead of the 2015 season but returned to Bohs’ in February of that year after not being able to commit to the demands of full time football with John Caulfield’s side.

Mulcahy made 23 appearances for Bohemians’ in 2015, remaining at the club in 2016 before joining Waterford in 2017.

After being a regular in the Waterford side, Mulcahy departed the club in July by mutual consent and has now signed for Pete Mahon’s Drogheda.

Mulcahy may be in line to make his debut in Kilkenny against his former club Evergreen in the FAI Cup next Sunday as the Boynesiders, who are rooted to the bottom of the table, take a break from league action.
