Watch: 27 Years Ago Today Ireland Were the Greatest Football Team

Anyone that was alive 27 years ago today will likely remember exactly where they were and what their reaction was to the events that unfolded in the World Cup when Ireland overcame Romania to advance to the Quarter Finals of the tournament.

I would like to very much say that Extratime.ie were there that day however, the internet was not exactly a thing back then and it would take another 18 years before over a pint in a dark corner of a pub this website would be created.

The shoot-out itself saw Packie Bonner save THAT penalty and give David O'Leary the chance to become a folk hero, something that Robbie Brady would get to experience in Lille 26 years later.

Jack Charlton would also forever become a hero in the eyes of this countries proud people for his part in causing grown men to cry and look at each other with that look of disbelief that Ireland were had done it.

A generation that had not been born yet would experience the same feeling on a June night in France last summer in what has been build as their Italia 90 experience. However, a World Cup Quarter Final still eludes us although hopes are high that Martin O'Neill and Roy Keane can change that in our push to Russia in 2018.
