Watch: One year on, Robbie Brady's historic goal against Italy at the Euros

A year ago today, Martin O'Neill's Republic of Ireland arrived in Lille in the north of France knowing nothing less than a win over Italy would suffice to gain entry to the knockout stages.

We hoped Italian boss Antonio Conté would rest some players for the bigger games ahead, and duly he did, with just three players remaining from the side that beat Sweden five days earlier.

More important were the changes Martin O'Neill made, bringing in four fresh faces as Ireland pursued a gameplan of relentless chasing.

Wes Hoolahan, who scored Ireland's goal in the opener against Sweden, was dropped but, with the finale approaching and no sign of an Irish goal, 'Wessi' was sprung from the bench.

He missed a glorious chance to give Ireland the lead after a slip from Leonardo Bonucc in the dying minutes, showing uncharacteristic hesitation with the goal at his mercy.

But the Norwich City wizard wasn't done, cutting back off Aiden McGeady's pass and clipping a left-footed cross into the box and on a sixpence for Robbie Brady to head home.

Extratime.ie was there to take you through the Irish team's entire journey in France, and you can read our match report from the day here.
