Watch: McClean and Smith put Waterford top at UCD's expense

Waterford moved about UCD and Athlone Town into top spot in the First Division following their 2-0 win over the Students on Friday night.

First Waterford goals for defender Patrick McClean and Swindon Town loanee Tom Smith won the day for the Blues after a hard-fought first half had finished goalless.

Collie O'Neill's Students came into the fixture on top of the table following Dublin Derby wins over Cabinteely and Shelbourne while Waterford were surprisingly beaten in Athlone on matchday one.

But Pat Fenlon's side hit their stride with a 3-0 win of their own over Cabo and they continued with what was ultimately a comfortable win at the UCD Bowl.

McClean, a winter signing from Derry City, opened the scoring just after the hour as he nodded home after Garry Comerford had headed Shane O'Connor's corner up in the air.

Smith secured all three points five minutes from the end as he took Davy McDaid's pass and cut inside Liam Scales before finishing in the corner.
