Watch: McCaffrey strike earns Drogheda opening day win in Galway

Shane Keegan's first competitive game in charge of Galway United ended in defeat as Drogheda United marked their return to the Premier Division with an impressive away win.

Substitute Gareth McCaffrey scored the only goal of the game nine minutes from time as he latched onto a through-ball from fellow sub Thomas Byrne and rounded Ciaran Nugent.

It was a tough result for Galway to take, having dominated the first half in which Vinny Faherty saw his shot hit the crossbar and both Faherty and Ronan Murray denied by Stephen McGuinness.

Stephen Elliott and Adam Wixted had half-chances for the visitors either side of half time, and Gareth McCaffrey was well-denied by McGuigan before he eventually got his name on the scoresheet.
