Paul Murphy leaves Waterford and returns to junior football

Striker Paul 'Spot' Murphy has departed Waterford just three weeks into his latest spell at the club and re-signed for Wexford Football League side North End United.

The former Wexford Youths man was one of the first signings announced by the recently-rebranded club at the beginning of January but has left without featuring in any pre-season games, citing work commitments.

“Sorry to say due to work commitments I'll no longer be playing for @WaterfordFCie,” Murphy wrote on Twitter.

“Thanks to Pat [Fenlon], Alan [Reynolds] and the club for the chance!”

The 25-year-old spent time with English side Ipswich Town but was released when his contract expired in 2010 and signed for what was then called Waterford United.

Murphy spent a year-and-a-half at the RSC, scoring 14 times in 37 games for the First Division outfit, before returning to junior football with North End.

The Wexford native was signed by Wexford Youths boss Shane Keegan ahead of the 2016 Premier Division season and scored four goals as the club were relegated in a play-off.
