Jason Byrne to continue chasing Brendan Bradley's goalscoring record at Cabinteely

Jason Byrne will once again link up with the man who brought him to the League of Ireland after signing with Pat Devlin's Cabinteely for the 2017 season.

The prolific striker sits on 221 League of Ireland career goals – just 14 off Brendan Bradley's all-time record of 235 – and will continue to chase down the total in south Dublin.

38-year-old Byrne, who spent last season with 'Devo' at UCD, first linked up with the Cabo director of football as a teenager when he brought him to Bray Wanderers from St Colmcille's in Tallaght.

In between, the Fettercairn native has spent time at Shelbourne, Cardiff City, Bohemians, Dundalk and the Students, as well as appearing twice for the Republic of Ireland under Brian Kerr.

He has won the Premier Division title five times, three times with Shels and twice with Bohs, and has cup winner's medals with both Bray and the Gypsies.

Now his goal will be more modest – to help the League of Ireland's youngest club to improve on the eighth and seventh-placed finishes achieved in their two years of senior football to date.

“I am delighted to have signed Jason,” Devlin told Cabinteely's official website.

“I have known him all throughout his career. It is great to have him onboard here.

“I think he still has a lot to offer and he is a great man to have in the dressing room especially in our squad of young players. They can learn a lot from him.

“I am looking forward to seeing him score a few goals for us now.”
