Pulis hails 'first class' McClean as Ireland winger signs new West Brom deal

West Bromwich Albion boss Tony Pulis hailed 'first class' James McClean as the midfielder penned a new two-and-a-half-year deal with the English Premier League club.

The Republic of Ireland international has established himself as a key component of the Welshman's side since signing from Wigan Athletic during the summer of 2015.

The former Derry City and Sunderland winger joined following Wigan's relegation to League One and has proved his versatility by filling in at left-back in his first season at the Hawthorns.

McClean has also an important figure at international level, having impressed at Euro 2016 in the summer before scoring decisive goals in World Cup qualifying wins over Austria and Moldova.

“James thoroughly deserves this and has worked hard to achieve it,” Pulis told the club's website.

“James’s attitude and commitment to the group is first class and I’m delighted to see that approach rewarded in this way.”

"For what we paid, he's been a terrific signing for us.”

The 27-year-old has featured 58 times for the Baggies in 18 months, scoring four times, although he's found game time harder to come by this season.

McClean has been a substitute for each of the last six league games, having lost his place following successive defeats to Liverpool and Manchester City in October.

"He's a good lad,” Pulis continued.

“He's not been in the team lately but his attitude in training and around the place. He's just a great kid.

"He's scatty but that's James, he's a good lad with it."
