Macron Galway Cup 2016 - Day 3

Another bright sky above was the backdrop to semi-finals and the last stages of the 2001 Elite playing out. With numerous penalty shootouts, fabulous goals and saves, as well as the odd surprising result to boot, it was quite a day of football on show here on the third day of the Macron Galway Cup.

With little wind to affect play this day, Mervue United and Salthill Devon kicked us off with a local derby in the play-off for the 2001 Club Bowl semi-finals. A tense game had plenty of goals and finished two-all before Mervue trumped the home team by winning a seemingly never-ending shootout in sudden death.

The 2003 Elite semi-finals in the Cup and Plate started at 10.40am and saw Northern Ireland playing an entertaining game against Donegal in the Cup. Donegal scored a late equalizer after withstanding vast pressure in the defence before winning 3-0 on penalties. They will now face Sligo/Leitrim in the final after they overcame Mervue United by three goals to one.

More penalties followed the Kildare and West Cork Plate semi-final as they drew one-all before West Cork saw themselves through with a 3-2 win on penalties. North Tipperary will be the side they face as they prevailed by a single goal in a close match against Athlone.

The first Republic of Ireland squad of the day were the Future Developers as they played in the 2001 Club Cup semi-final against Nenagh AFC. In a tight affair in which they went one down, the national squad came back to score two and book a spot against Cavan/Monaghan in the final. The district league saw off the Longford Town Academy by a single goal.

The 2003/04 Boys Cup semi-finals saw Carlow take on Athlone and win by four goals to one as Mayo edged Galway in a 2-1 victory. In the Plate for the same category, Salthill Devon lost out to Mervue United with United going to the final by a 4-2 scoreline in their favour.

The second 2001 Elite game of the day had the Republic of Ireland u16 Development squad face Leeds United and while both teams played a good standard of football, the national side stole the show by scoring five goals without reply in a surprising result for that scale. Cherry Orchard followed up with a 1-0 win over Ipswich Town to see them once more play Town in the Cup final for this category.

The 2003 Elite Bowl semi-finals had the NDSL play against the NECSL with the former taking a close victory by just the single goal. They will now play against Carlow in the Bowl final after they defeated Roscommon by three goals to nil. The 2003/04 group finished off with Tulla FC winning two-nil against Colga.

Mervue United continued their form from earlier in the day in the 2001 Club Bowl competition as they defeated Finn Harps by two goals to one having previously come through a play-off to get into it. They’ll once more face Salthill Devon, this time their 02 side, as they won on penalties against Kildrum Tigers after a one-all draw.

The last semi-finals in the 2003 Elite saw Clare lose to Cavan//Monaghan by one goal to nil in the Shield competition while on another pitch, Kerry prevailed on penalties after drawing nil-all with Longford. The 2001 Club Plate semi-finals at the same time had another penalty finish with NECSL going head-to-head with Kerry after drawing one-all. With multiple misses and saves form the goalkeepers, it finally finished with Kerry the victors by four to three in sudden death.

The last round of games saw the 2003 Premier semi-finals play out with Colorado Rapids scoring a brilliant freekick in either half to see off Foyle Harps by three goals to one while Salthill Devon lost 3-1 to Finn Harps in the Cup. In the Plate competition, Galway put five past Roscommon without reply and WWEC beat Kerry by five goals to two.
