Brosnan relishing top tier test

Seán Brosnan was announced as the latest addition to Cork City's Premier Division squad for 2013 and the Castleisland native is relishing the chance to make an impact in the top tier.

Despite winning the league with Limerick last season, the twenty-year old forward made the switch to Turners Cross. Brosnan, who is studying in Cork, says winning the First Division only increased his desire to challenge himself further. “It's always been an ambition of mine to play in the top division in Ireland. After winning the league last year, I was really looking forward to be playing in the Premier Division and signing for Cork City gave me the opportunity to do that. I'm looking forward to it now to see the step up in standard and hopefully i can do well.”

Cork City's support is among the best in the division and Brosnan admits that the stature of the club did play a part in him joining the Rebel Army. “First of all, Cork City is a great club and having played at Turners Cross with Limerick on a few occasions, I know that the fans are great and give full support to the players no matter what. There is always a good atmosphere at the Cross and i cant wait to play there for the coming season.”

The opening game of the season sees Brosnan's Cork City face his former side Limerick at Thomond Park, but Brosnan insists that no grudge is held with the Blues whatsoever. “I had a great time with Limerick for the last two years and it was a great experience last year winning the First Division at such a young age. I'd like to thank everyone at Limerick as well, including the fans who were always brilliant with me. It will be a great experience to go back, especially to Thomond Park and play against all the lads and see them all again.”

When asked what lessons he felt he could take with him from his time in the First Division, Brosnan was quick to mention togetherness and teamwork. “It's all about what is best for the team. That's what I've learned from playing in First Division. Everyone on the team must do their jobs and work hard, then the quality of your players shines through. I hope my experiences in Limerick's first team will stand me in good stead in the Premier Division with Cork City.”

For a player at twenty years of age, game time is the most important thing to have. Brosnan acknowledged this when he spoke about his aims for the year. “My personal ambition for the coming season is to just nail down a spot in the first eleven and hopefully have a good first season in the Premier Division in Ireland. A couple of goals wouldn't go astray either(!).”
