Cork City have announced that Garry Buckley has re-signed with the club for the 2013 season.

The news will please Cork City fans as the youngster had spent time on trial in England with Stevenage and various other clubs.

An intelligent central midfielder who likens himself to Steven Gerrard, Buckley first came to prominence in the 2011/12 season, when, as team captain, he led the Cork City U19 squad to a league and cup double, as well as claiming the U19 Airtricity Player of the Year.

The 19 year-old Cork man then featured sporadically for the club’s senior squad throughout 2012, and scored his first goal in senior football against Derry City in September of that year.

He won over a lot of City supporters right away, and consolidated his potential with a superb mature performance against a Manchester United XI in July - his ability to anticipate and prevent enemy attacks as well as his cool head in possession earning deserved plaudits.

Speaking to CorkCityFC.ie, Cork manager Tommy Dunne said: “Garry is a promising young player and he did well for us last season.”
