Cup draw produces fascinating ties

The draw for the second round of this year’s FAI Ford Cup was made on Monday  evening.

All 20 Airtricity League teams were in the hat along with 12 non-league sides.

There are two all Premier Division ties which see Cup holders Sligo Rovers host Roddy Collins’ Monaghan United, and losing cup finalists from last year Shelbourne make the short trip to Bray Wanderers.

It’s second against second at Tallaght Stadium as Shamrock Rovers, second in the Premier Division play Limerick, who occupy second place in the First Division.

There are a number of derby games too with Derry City and Finn Harps due to renew rivalries at the Brandywell. Crumlin United play host to near neighbours St. Patrick’s Athletic. This is a repeat of the third round last year, when the game was actually switched to Richmond Park, this may happen again this year but we await news on that. The Saints won that game 3-0. The other derbies see Phoenix FC cross the Liffey to play UCD at the Belfield Bowl, an all Galway affair between SD Galway and Mervue United and there is also a Munster derby as Everton FC of Cork play Waterford United.

Everton are one of five Cork based teams left in the competition. Cork City play Athlone Town at Turners Cross. An interested spectator at this game will be John O'Sullivan the ex Cork City chairman who has recently been appointed Athlone Town CEO.

Of the other Cork teams Mayfield United travel to Drogheda United, Blarney United host Malahide United, Douglas Hall are at home to Wexford Youths and Avondale have a long trip to play Kildrum Tigers in Donegal.

Donegal are also well represented at this stage of the Cup as along with the aforementioned Finn Harps and Kildrum Tigers, Drumkeen United will be hoping to make it to the third round but they must travel to Dublin to Play Bohemians at Dalymount Park first.

The two remaining ties see Dundalk at home to St Pats YC of Dublin, and another side from the capital Cherry Orchard play First Division Leaders Longford Town.
