Dee hoping for Castlebar improvement

Castlebar Celtic come to Cork this weekend hoping to end their recent slump which has seen them without a win in their last four games.

Jeremy Dee who managed the team for most of the season has stepped away from his coaching role in order to concentrate on his duties as club licensing officer and he has appointed the vastly experienced Johnny Morris Burke as manager and Dee is confident it was the right move for the club.

“I appointed Johnny as head coach a couple of weeks ago because I felt it was important that I step away from the National League side to concentrate on building the club and making it sustainable in the long run,” he said.

“Johnny is a development officer with the FAI and he’s taken to the role of manager very well. He has a lot of experience in the game especially with Connaught in the Gaynor Cup and he managed the successful team in last year’s under 18 competition and that team had a good number of players that are in our squad now.

“I think his appointment is a massive step in the right direction. For me the project of the National League was always about getting the right people into the right positions. Just like having the right players, it is just as important to have the right staff around them,” said Dee.

The Mayo outfit have conceded 22 goals in their last four league games and are currently level on points with Cork. The teams played out a 2 – 2 draw in CIT earlier on the season and Dee would be happy with another point on the road.

“I’m expecting us to stop the rot more than anything on Sunday. The issues we had were really brought home to us when Cork beat us in Celtic Park back in February. We were happy enough with the draw in Cork earlier in the season and I think Cork would have been happy to get a point out of that game too but by the time we had the return fixture and they beat us 4 – 1 we were conceding far too many goals and not converting enough of our chances,” he said.

“We have three players away with the Irish under 19 team and so do Cork so from a quality perspective I hope all six players come back from that in good shape for Sunday’s game.”
