Ex-LOI Cross Channel - Week 3

A summary of all the weekend appearances for the ex-League of Ireland players now plying their trade cross channel.

Carling Cup
Last week saw the second round of the Carling Cup. Here’s how some former League of Ireland players got on.

Former Shels winger Wes Hoolahan played just over an hour as his Norwich side were thrashed 4-0 by MK Dons from League One, who had ex LOI players Shaun Willams (Sporting Fingal) and Jay O’Shea (Bray and Galway) playing for them. Williams played the whole game, while O’Shea came on as a sub with 16 minutes left.

Ex Bohs ‘keeper Brian Murphy made his QPR debut in their 2-0 loss to Rochdale.

Another former Bohs player Matt Doherty made his first start of the season in Wolves 4-0 win over Northampton Town.

Two ex St Pat’s players Stephen Quinn and Dave McAllister were involved as Sheffield United lost 3-1 at Everton. Quinn played the whole game and also set up the Blades’ goal. McAllister, also formerly of Shels, came on as a sub in the 74th minute.

Scottish League Cup
Former Shels striker Richie Foran played in Inverness Caledonian Thistle’s 1-0 defeat at Ayr United.

Another former Shels player James Chambers played 55 minutes for Hamilton in their 2-1 defeat at home to Ross County. The ex Shamrock Rovers Drogheda and Waterford man scored his sides goal from the penalty spot after two minutes.

Premiership
The early kick off on Saturday saw Kevin Doyle (ex Pats and Cork), and Stephen Ward formerly of Bohs, both complete 90 minutes for their sides scoreless draw at Aston Villa.

Wes Hoolahan and his Norwich team mates may have suffered an unexpected defeat to MK Dons during the week there was nothing surprising about their 3-1 loss against Chelsea on Saturday. A game in which Hoolahan played an hour.

Conor Sammon formerly of UCD and Derry replaced goal scorer Franco Di Santo in Wigan’s 2-0 win against QPR. Sammon came on in the 69th minute.

Ex Cork City striker Shane Long played the full game as West Brom lost to Stoke City.

Championship
Ex Cork City forward Roy O’Donovan had a big part to play in Coventry’s equaliser at Middlesbrough. The cork man’s shot in the 76th minute was saved but his strike partner Lukasz Jutkiewicz was on hand to head home the rebound to earn the Sky Blues a point.

Having suffered two defeats recently which saw them concede 12 goals, Damien Delaney (ex Cork City) and his Ipswich team mates gave their fans something to cheer with a 2-1 win over Leeds United.

Ex Waterford and Shamrock Rovers striker Noel Hunt played 73 minutes of his sides 1-0 defeat at Hull City.

David Forde (ex Derry and Galway) played 90 minutes and kept a clean sheet in Millwall’s nil all draw against Barnsley.

Ex UCD man Gary Dicker played 90 minutes for Brighton as they beat Peterborough 2-0. Peterborough are it seems close to signing Dundalk winger Daniel Kearns.

League One
Former Derry defender Mark McChrystal was on the winning side against former Monaghan Midfielder Jonathan Douglas as Tranmere Rovers beat Brentford 2-0 on Saturday.

Ex Cork City duo Leon McSweeney and Dave Mooney were both substituted in Leyton Orient’s 2-1 defeat to Carlisle. McSweeney played 78 minutes while Mooney also formerly of Shamrock Rovers and Longford lasted 65 minutes.

Shaun Williams again played the full game for MK Dons in their 1-0 win against Stevenage. James O’Shea was again used as a sub, this time in the 69th minute.

Stephen Quinn played the full game in Sheffield United’s 1-0 nil win at Yeovil. Dave McAllister came on in the 57th minute.

League Two
Kevin Long the former Cork defender on loan from Burnley, played 90 minutes as Stevenage beat Burton 2-1.

Another ex Cork defender Alan Bennett captained a Cheltenham side who inflicted the first defeat on Crawley Town in 34 games. It wasn’t all good news for Bennett as he gave away a penalty from which Crawley scored.

Scottish Premier League
Sean Dillon the former Longford and Shelbourne defender played 90 minutes in Dundee United’s 3-3 draw with St. Johnstone.

Richie Foran played 81 minutes in Inverness’ 2-1 win against Kilmarnock.

Scottish Division One
Ex Derry and Shamrock Rovers striker Thomas Stewart came on as a 72nd minute sub in Partick Thistle’s 2-1 win against Queen of the South.

James Chambers played the whole game for Hamilton is their 1-1 draw with Livingston.
