St Ledger promotes Three Trade-In Scheme

There aren't many professional footballers these days that would play 90 minutes in a League Cup game away to Bury on a Tuesday night and then wake up at 5am the next morning to fly to Dublin to have someone paint on you, while you stand almost motionless for the best part of an hour.

And then there is Sean St Ledger. True, most footballers earn scandalous amounts of money per week, have ridiculous haircuts and far too many tattoos, but not this man. The Leicester centre-back is as down to earth as they come and is the ambassador for Friends in Ireland, an Irish charity which seeks to to improve the well being of orphans and vulnerable children in South Africa.

The Republic of Ireland international seemed like he had all the time in the world as spent his day off this week to take time out to promote the charity. He even went as far as to have the Ireland jersey painted on him, while he was photographed and filmed by onlooking press, always smiling and always seeming like he really enjoyed what he was doing – something which isn't too common amongst the modern day footballer.

The Birmingham-born defender may not have the same accent as the rest of his Irish team-mates but you get the impression from the man that he feels right at home as he sat and chatted in the Aviva Stadium.

“It's a great scheme were you hand in your old jersey get €20 off the new jersey. As a young lad getting a new jersey was always a buzz and with the games coming up there is no better time,” St Ledger said, urging fans to go out to support the scheme.

It cost the charity, Champion Sports and phone network Three nothing to launch this great cause due to the fact St Ledger put all the money straight back into the charity and he himself will fly to South Africa to hand over the jerseys to the children before the bitter South African winter sets in.

Turning matters to football, and while St Ledger himself admits his club form has been inconsistent, he has been a key player for Giovanni Trapttoni at the heart of the Irish defence. Following relegation with Preston last year, St Ledger is back in the Championship working with Sven Goran Eriksson at Leicester and is sure to continue to be a key part of Trapattoni's masterplan to qualify for the European Championships in Poland and the Ukraine next summer.
