Joe O’Brien-Whitmarsh has moved to Championship side Southampton. The 18-year-old came through the ranks at Cork City and went on to make over 25 appearances.

The club has agreed terms on an undisclosed compensation package, from which City will also stand to benefit in the future.

Cork City head of academy Liam Kearney offered his thoughts on the move: “Everyone at the club thinks very highly of Joe, both in terms of his ability, and his character.

“This is a good opportunity for him, so we thank him for his time at the club and wish him every success in the future.”

He joins a Southampton squad that contains Ireland internationals Gavin Bazunu, Will Smallbone and Ryan Manning.

Meanwhile Harry Nevin has completed his switch to Cork City from Preston North End.

Nevin, 19, returns to the Turner’s Cross side from the English Championship outfit.

The 21-year-old came through the City academy before moving on to Preston in 2020. He also spent half a season on loan at Waterford last year.

And the versatile defender joins a City side hoping to go straight back up to the Premier Division after last season’s relegation.

The Cork native expressed his delight at the move: “I’m looking forward to the season ahead and focused on getting the club back to where it should be.

“Its great to have a chance to play for my hometown club at senior level. I just have to work hard now and earn myself a place in the team.”
