Former Ireland striker Cillian Sheridan joins A-League side Wellington Phoenix

Former Republic of Ireland striker Cillian Sheridan has joined Hyundai A-League side Wellington Phoenix following his departure from Polish Ekstraklasa side Jagiellonia Bia?ystok.

Sheridan makes the move to New Zealand following spells at Celtic, Plymouth Argyle and Kilmarnock and Cypriot side APOEL, where the Cavan native made his Champions League bow. 

The Bailieborough man played a pivotal role in APOEL’s treble winning season, which sealed the Cypriots’ place in the Champions League Group stages.

Sheridan made appearances against Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Ajax in the Champions League while at the club.

A spell at Omonia Nicosia then ensued before the 6’4 striker joined Polish side Jagiellonia, whom he helped to a second-place league finish in 2017.

“To play in another country with different challenges is always appealing to me,” the 29-year-old told the club’s official website.

“I have followed the Hyundai A-League and Wellington Phoenix are playing an attractive style and for a footballer, you want to enjoy your football and what Mark Rudan is doing, really sold it to me.”

Phoenix manager Mark Rudan added: “I'm constantly looking to challenge my players.

“Competition for places is crucial and at this time of the season, it's important to strengthen the squad and add quality.”

Sheridan is in line to face to make his Hyundai A-League when Wellington Phoenix face Adelaide United on January 5^th.
