Sligo Rovers appoint Liam Buckley as new manager

Legendary former St Patrick’s Athletic manager Liam Buckley has been announced as the new Sligo Rovers boss for the forthcoming 2019 season at the Showgrounds.

Buckley, or ‘Bucko’, as he was affectionately referred to as at Richmond Park, joins the Bit O’Red with two Premier Division titles, one FAI Cup and two League Cup titles under his belt.

The 2018 season has been far from an ideal year all round for Sligo Rovers. Languishing at the foot of the table, only ahead of perennial strugglers Bray Wanderers and Limerick FC throughout, previous manager Ger Lyttle was forced to pay with his job after a year of frustrating inconsistencies at the Northwest club.

Speaking on his arrival at the club, Buckley revealed that he is delighted to have joined forces with Rovers, who he said is in a ‘footballing’ town.

“I’m really happy to be here. It’s great opportunity for me and I’ve always loved my games at The Showgrounds.” Buckley said.

“It’s a footballing town. I think there is players here that are technically good. I want to improve them and the club and see where it can take us.”

Sligo Rovers chairman Martin Heraghty also had his say on the deal saying; “From the outset Liam was our number one choice for the role. His record is outstanding in the League of Ireland and the brand of football he brings with it is renowned. We’re delighted to reach agreement for him to join us.

“It’s our intention that 2019 is a big year for Sligo Rovers. We know this appointment will excite our supporters and the committee encourages everyone at the club to get behind Liam.

“To attract a manager of Liam’s ability shows the potential at our club and we really feel he is the man to help us improve our league position for 2019 and bring exciting nights to The Showgrounds again.”

Buckley will be in attendance at the Showgrounds this evening as the Bit O’Red host Shamrock Rovers before he officially takes the reins of the club on November 1st.
