Striker Michael O'Connor joins Linfield from Shamrock Rovers

Linfield have signed striker Michael O'Connor on a one-year deal after he was released by Shamrock Rovers.

The Dundalk native joined the Hoops from his hometown club 18 months ago but has been a peripheral figure.

The 19-year-old spent the first half of 2018 on loan at First Division Finn Harps, scoring three times for Ollie Horgan's side.

O'Connor scored twice for Linfield in a friendly against Waterford last week and was quickly signed up to a permanent deal by manager David Healy on the back of a strong showing.

“Michael shone as a trialist in the friendly game against Waterford, scoring both goals and having another goal ruled out due to offside,” Healy told the club's official website.

“He’s an exciting prospect who already has considerable pedigree having played for Shamrock Rovers, Finn Harps on loan and his home town club Dundalk, where he has won winner's medals and featured in the Champions League.

“Everyone who saw him in action last night was impressed and I’ve received lots of messages urging me to sign Michael which I’m now delighted to be able to confirm.

“He’s really keen to get started and I’m looking forward to working with him in training.

“He’s a confident lad who will add to our firepower upfront and I just know our supporters will welcome him to the club.”
