Captain Paul McShane signs new deal at Reading

Republic of Ireland international defender has signed a new one-year extension to his contract at Reading to keep him with the Berkshire club until 2019.

Kilpedder native McShane was made club captain by manager Jaap Stam at the beginning of last season as the Royals exceeded all expectations to reach the Championship play-off final.

It was to prove one step too far for Stam's young team as they were defeated on penalties by Huddersfield Town but McShane's leading role hasn't gone unnoticed at the Madjeski Stadium.

“Macca entered the last year of his contract this season and it is important to ensure your experienced players remain part of your squad and help the club move forward,” said Stam.

“His mentality was so important to the team as a whole, as was his role in helping us play the ball out from the back.

“I’m very pleased he has agreed to remain a key part of this squad and what we want to achieve at Reading.”

McShane began his professional career as a trainee with Manchester United and had spells with Brighton & Hove Albion, Sunderland and Hull City before moving to Reading in 2015.

The 31-year-old has represented his country 13 times since debuting in a 1-1 draw with the Czech Republic at Lansdowne Road in 2006.
