Cork City sign defender Robbie Williams from Limerick

Cork City have announced the signing of former Limerick centre-half Robbie Williams following his release by Munster neighbours Limerick.

The Englishman has spent the past four-and-a-half seasons with the Shannonsiders, having initially been signed by Stuart Taylor ahead of their first season back at the top level in 2013.

32-year-old Williams has been an ever-present in the Blues side since signing from Plymouth Argyle and he was vice-captain as they lifted the First Division title in 2016.

He appeared in 21 of Limerick's 22 games so far this season but his relationship with new manager Neil McDonald seemed to come undone when he was placed on the transfer list last week.

He will serve as centre-half cover with the injuries to captain John Dunleavy and Alan Bennett and youngsters Sean O'Mahony and Sean McLoughlin competing at the University Games.

“It all came about very quickly,” Williams told the club's official website.

“I am delighted to be here and hope to get cracking straight away. It was a no brainer when I spoke to John and he showed the interest in bringing me in.

“Cork City have been flying this season and it will be tough to break in, but I am here for three months and I will give it my best shot.

“Turner’s Cross has been full because the team has been doing so well and, every time I have played down here, the atmosphere has been great, probably the best in the country, so I am looking forward to it and can’t wait to get started.”

Caulfield added: “Kevin O’Connor has obviously gone to Preston, and we have also lost Johnny Dunleavy to injury.

“Added to that, you also have Sean O’Mahony and Sean McLoughlin travelling to the World Student Games in August, so to bring in a player who knows the league inside out and has played so regularly is great for us.

“Robbie will also share his vast experience and knowledge of the game with our younger players.”
