Ethan McCarthy switches Cobh for US coaching job

Cobh Ramblers F.C, have announced that the club’s Under 19 coach Ethan McCarthy has been appointed to a coaching role in the US. McCarthy will be coaching at The Football Factory (TFF), an indoor soccer turf facility located in Bergen County, New Jersey.

He began his coaching career aged 17 and built up a lot of experience working with Christian Brothers College, UCC, Cork Youth League and the Cork Schoolboys League, in advance of his roles at Carrigaline and Cobh. He obtained his UEFA B licence at the age of just 22.

McCarthy switched to Cobh Ramblers from Carrigaline United (where he worked with League of Ireland legend Greg O’Halloran) in 2016 to take responsibility for Ramblers Under 17 side. He led his young Cobh charges to victory in the Mark Farren Memorial Shield. McCarthy’s men also went close in the other two competitions, reaching the Cup semi-finals and narrowly missing out on the league play-offs.

McCarthy took over the Cobh Ramblers Under 19s in preparation for the 2017 season. He and his lieutenants Colm Bermingham and Len Walker have been busily readying the squad for the new campaign. Bermingham and Walker will continue in their roles as Ramblers begin the search for McCarthy’s replacement when he heads stateside in a few weeks.

McCarthy will be missed around Cobh and St. Colman’s Park but this is a wonderful break for one of Ireland’s most promising young coaches. The TFF Academy provides football facilities for players aged five upwards. Ethan’s initial contract is for nine months but the possibility of an extension is available in November should the arrangement suit both parties.
