Derry City defender Aaron Barry signs new deal

Derry City have confirmed that defender Aaron Barry has committed to the club for another season.

The Arklow-born centre half has signed up for a fourth season at the Candystripes, having joined from Sheffield United in 2014.

24-year-old Barry had been linked with other Premier Division clubs after, like teammate Conor McCormack who signed for Cork, the decline in the value of sterling was affecting his wage packet.

However the defender – who was ever-present alongside captain Ryan McBride at the heart of defence before injury ended his season prematurely – has opted to return ahead of Kenny Shiels' side's European campaign.

Barry appeared 17 times in the league for Derry in 2016, scoring once in a 3-0 victory over Bray Wanderers, and racked up three cup appearances.

The Wicklow man played his underage football with local club Arklow Town before moving to Sheffield United. He had a short spell on loan at Dumbarton before leaving Sheffield without making a senior appearance.
