League Preview: Cabinteely - V - Limerick

Cabinteely will welcome the visit of First Division champions Limerick in their final game of the season in the SSE Airtricity First Division at Stradbrook on Saturday evening (kick-off 7.45pm).

CABINTEELY

Cabinteely will look to end what has been a very disappointing league campaign by becoming only the second side to inflict a defeat on SSE Airtricity League First Division Champions Limerick. Cabo have nothing to play for apart from avoiding finishing bottom of the table ahead of Athlone Town, who entertain Cobh at the same time on Saturday.

Cabinteely were comprehensively dispatched 3-0 by Cobh Ramblers at St. Colman’s Park last Saturday evening. Cabo have managed just one win in their last six league matches with a shock 1-0 victory over promotion/relegation play-off contenders Drogheda United at Stradbrook two weeks ago.

Apart from that, Eddie Gormley’s side have only picked up a draw away to fellow strugglers Waterford United. Cabo have found goals very hard to come by with just two goals scored in their last six and defensively they have been poor, having shipped 11 goals in the same number of games.

Cabinteely boss Eddie Gormley will be hoping that his side can produce an inspired display to take a positive result against the champions and avoid the humiliation of getting the wooden spoon.

LIMERICK

Runaway league champions Limerick will round off their impressive season with a trip to the capital to take on second bottom side Cabinteely. The Super Blues have been unrelenting in their pursuit of promotion back to the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division and have simply been streets ahead of the chasing pack.

The Shannonsiders were made to work hard to earn a 2-1 victory over second place Drogheda United at the Market’s Field last Saturday in an ill-tempered game which saw both sides being dismissed to ten men. The home side had to play nearly an hour of the game a man down with Chris Mulhall being sent for an early bath after two first half yellow cards.

Early strikes from Paul O’Connor and Robbie Williams put the Super Blues in command before a late Sean Thornton goal made it a nervy last few minutes for the champions. Drogheda’s fate was sealed when they had Sean Brennan dismissed shortly after. The Super Blues received the SSE Airtricity First Division trophy after the match in front of the home fans and received a rapturous applause.

Limerick have been in arguably their poorest form of the season having lost two of their last six league and cup matches.

The Super Blues boss Martin Russell was understandably pleased with the result and will be hoping his side can make one final push and end the season the way they begun it in style.
