Dundalk's five possible Champions League play-off opponents

Dundalk now know their five possible opponents for the UEFA Champions League Play-off round after the third qualifying round came to an end tonight.

The five seeded teams will be Czech champions Viktoria Plzen, Cypriot champions APOEL Nicosia, Austrian champions Red Bull Salzburg, Polish champions Legia Warsaw and Scottish champions Glasgow Celtic.

APOEL Nicosia overcame Norwegian champions Rosenborg last night with three stoppage time goals to earn a 3-0 victory and 4-2 aggregate win.

Champions of Cyprus 25 times, their league win last season was their fourth consecutive title. Managed by ex-Spanish international Thomas Christensen, they'll be aiming to make it to the group stages for the fourth time in their history, the previous time during the 2014/15 season.

Viktoria Plzen overcame Azerbaijani champions Karabakh Agdam with an away goals 1-1 away win. An 85th minute equaliser yesterday ensured they secured their place in the play-off round.

Four times champions of the Czech Republic, the first time only being in 2010/11, Viktoria have become a household name domestically and even in Europe. Managed by Roman Pevarnik, Viktoria will be aiming for their third appearance in the group stages, their most recent during the 2013/14 season.

Red Bull Salzburg won 2-0 tonight and sealed their fate against Albanian runners-up Partizani Tirana with a 3-0 aggregate win.

Champions of Austria a total of 10 times, last season's title was their third on the trot. Managed by Spaniard Oscar Garcia, they will be aiming to make it to the group stages for only the second time in their history. Their single appearance at that stage came during the old format of the Champions League in 1994/95.

Legia Warsaw's 0-0 draw tonight confirmed their 1-0 aggregate win over Slovakian champions Trencin to see their passage to the play-off round.

Eleven times champions of Poland and managed by ex-Albania international Besnik Hasi, they will be aiming for only their second appearance at the group stages of the Champions League. Losing semi-finalists in 1970, they earned their only appearance in the old-format group stages during the 1995/96 campaign. In fact they defeated Blackburn Rovers 1-0 and made it as far as the quarter finals, but since then participation in the Champions League group stages has eluded the club.

Dundalk have never played any of these four teams in Europe, nor have they ever played any team from the representative's countries in a competitive European game. However, Dundalk have history with their fifth possible play-off opponent, who really don't require any introduction.

Celtic overcame Kazakh champions Astana on Wednesday night, with a narrow 2-1 victory and 3-2 aggregate win.

Champions of Scotland on no less than 47 occasions, Celtic can boast to have been the first British European Cup champion. They did so in the 1967 final, and indeed were also 1970 runners-up. They have plenty of European Champions League pedigree and now managed by Brendan Rodgers, they'll be aiming to continue their proud European tradition.

Dundalk narrowly were defeated by Celtic during the 1979/80 European Cup campaign in the second round. A 3-2 defeat at Celtic Park was followed by a 0-0 draw in Oriel Park as Dundalk narrowly missed out on a quarter final appearance, in what is their most famous European campaign to date.

Dundalk will find out their opponents on Friday, 5th August when the draw is made in Nyon, Switzerland at 12.00 CET. The first leg will be played on either the 16th or 17th of August and the second leg on the 23rd or 24th of August.
