Wexford Youths mark Euro debut with victory against top seeds

The Continental Tyres Women’s National League Champions kicked off their UEFA Women’s Champions League qualifier campaign earlier today in Poland. They faced a tough Lithuanian side that reached the Round of 32 last season.

Speaking to ExtraTime.ie ahead of kick off midfielder Becky Cassin said, “Everyone is looking forward to getting on to the pitch and performing for both each other and everyone that has supported us! This is a massive experience and opportunity. We have no intentions of sitting back and letting it go.”

The Youths had a number of opportunities throughout the opening half of the game from Clare O’Riordan but the vital goal came in the second half when they were awarded a free kick on the 67th minute. Carol Breen earned a free for her side and it was defender Jessica Gleeson who stepped up to take the set piece. Gleeson took the shot from 35 yards and hit the back of the net earning the Youths all three points on the opening day.

Ahead of kick off newly recruited Ruth Fahy said “the squad is feeling confident as we approach kick-off”. After today’s result, we expect the squad to be oozing with a new found confidence ahead of their next game on Thursday versus hosts Medyk Konin who are placed as second seeds.
