Mervue United -v- Waterford United

Having seen off the challenge of Liverpool on Wednesday night, Waterford United return to more humble settings with a crunch league tie against Mervue United at Fahy’s Field on Friday night (kick-off at 7.45).

Mervue can be more than happy with their performance in the league to date and as we reach the halfway stage in the season, the Galway club sit in seventh position and only two points behind tomorrow night’s opponents Waterford United. Indeed a win over their mid table rivals would see Mervue record three straight wins for the first time this season.

However Johnny Glynn’s men will face a stern test, not least because of their ever increasing injury list. Nicky Curran (knee), Damien O’Rourke (achilles), Dan Cunningham (hand) and Tom King (knee) are all ruled out injured while David Goldbey is unavailable.

David O’ Brien, TJ Forde and Noel Varley are all in contention to play.

In what has been a topsy-turvy season for the Blues to date, Wednesday’s victory over Liverpool will no doubt give Paul O’ Brien’s charges a much needed boost. Before Wednesday’s game, Waterford had previously suffered defeats to Wexford Youths at home and Shelbourne away.

O’ Brien will also have to deal without the services of Shane Dempsey and Lee Chin who were released from the club during the week.

Unsurprisingly manager O’ Brien was in buoyant following the win over Liverpool. Speaking midweek, he said:” I was thrilled by the performance of the lads against Liverpool. The lads have the ability and I asked them to go out and show what they've got and they delivered. But now we have to focus on Mervue and hopefully we can bring the confidence into that game."

Both sides will be fully aware of the importance of this tie. If Mervue were to occupy sixth position at this stage in the season, it would represent tremendous progress for the Galway club. A win offers Waterford the chance to put some space between themselves and Mervue, though their exertions on Wednesday night may take their toll.

Mervue United:
Injured: Nicky Curran (knee), Damien O’Rourke (achilles), Dan Cunningham (hand) and Tom King (knee). David Goldbey is unavailable.
Doubtful: David O’Brien, TJ Forde and Noel Varley could return to the squad having all missed the win last week.
