Former Bohemians left-back Conor Powell has signed for English League One side Colchester United on a free transfer.

The 23-year-old Dubliner has been without a club since his contract expired with The Gypsies at the end of the 2010 season, which ended in November.

Powell had stated before that it had always been an ambition of his to play in England, has signed with John Ward's men until the end of this season, with an option to extend that even further.

The U's boss is quite keen on the former Ireland Under-21 telling BBC Essex: "We think we've got a good young player there with things to prove. The Irish season was completed a little while ago so he hasn't been playing that regularly but it won't be long before we get him going.”

Powell was a key part of Bohemians back-to-back title successes in 2008 and 2009 and also won an FAI Cup and an EA Sports League Cup during his time at Dalymount Park.

He was also selected for the Airtricity XI which took on Manchester United at the Aviva Stadium last August.

Meanwhile, Colchester have also extend another former Airtricity League player's stay at the club, with ex-Longford Town forward Dave Mooney now staying on loan until May.
