Irish defender Neill Byrne is set to remain with Stockport County after signing a contract extension that will see him stay at Edgeley Park until 2025.

Byrne initially joined the Hatters from fellow League Two side Tranmere Rovers in January on a six-month contract.

The renewal of his contract signifies his third stint under manager Dave Challinor, having previously played for him at AFC Fylde and Hartlepool United.

Born in Portmarnock, Ireland, Byrne started his career with local Irish sides before moving to the Nottingham Forest Youth Academy when he was 14 years old.

His career trajectory has since led him to Edgeley Park, where he played a significant role in County's strong finish to the recent campaign. Out of the 21 League Two games Byrne played, the team only lost thrice and conceded 11 goals.

The extension of Byrne's contract, originally set to expire this summer, has been greeted with enthusiasm from Stockport's management.

Simon Wilson, the Director of Football, stated, “Neill came in on a short-term contract and made a great impact both on and off the pitch. He has turned down a number of other offers to stay here, and we are delighted to have him re-join the group for the coming seasons.”
