Galway United ushered in the New Year with the midnight announcement of the re-signing of Wilson Waweru.

The Academy product was given his debut under Alan Murphy in 2018 and has gone on to thrive in the first team over the past few seasons. The 21 year old forward netted his first senior goals for the club the following campaign, both against Athlone Town in league encounters in April and June respectively.

2020 saw him double his goal output with a brace in the league against two sides who went on to achieve promotion that season- Longford and Drogheda- while also scoring in the League Cup, again Athlone were the victims of his sharpshooting.  His final goal of the campaign was the memorable winner over Bray Wanderers in the Play Off series.

Last season saw Waweru double his four goals from 2020 as he found the net on eight occasions in the league, a campaign which saw the Tribesmen finish second in the table. Two of his strikes were winners against Bray and Cabinteely while he also scored for the third consecutive season against Athlone- this time a consolation in defeat.

Speaking with galwayunitedfc.com about his re-signing, Waweru was looking forward to the season ahead, “I’m delighted to sign for Galway United. It feels great, and being here for four years now, hopefully, we do well again this year”
