Wallace rues missed chances and weather

Wexford Youths’ Manager Mick Wallace was not a happy man Friday night, a mood seen too often this season at Ferrycarrig Park as his side yet again got sucker-punched despite looking comfortable. His side were drawing at home to Kildare on 67 minutes but a combination of the wind, bad defending and a sublime Philip Hughes effort saw them concede three goals in six minutes. The fact was that Wexford had the better of the play and chances. Gavin Doyle was looking not his usual self when clean through on Kelly only to tamely shoot close to the keeper and allow him to palm wide mid way through the opening half. Substitute Michael Mullen came on after the third goal and could’ve had a perfect hat-trick if his accuracy was honed a bit more.

Wallace spoke after the defeat to extratime.ie. ‘Well sure, it was one of those nights. Must’ve been the worst weather we’ve ever had out here. It was unbelievable, the 31st of July, what an incredible night, it rained so heavy and the wind!’

Reference to the weather was needed as two of the goals had a hand from it. Hughes second and the games third was an instinctive chip that sailed into the top corner whether the weather aided it or not.

‘It was just the way the game went. I mean, the elements were so bad but we were happy to be on top for the first hour. We controlled the game, but just didn’t score a goal’ said Wallace referring to his sides’ dominance in possession and chances.

The Youths had seen Doyle miss uncharacteristically and saw plenty of whipped balls fly out of play, telling then that County did not use the same wide tactics and opted to go down the middle most of the second half with the wind at their backs.

‘We weren’t panicking but then all of a sudden they scored one and it was three very quickly which was unbelievable really. It falls like that sometimes – we might not have been brilliant tonight but we weren’t that bad either.’ explained Wallace.

Wexford face Monaghan United at home this Friday. Monaghan have jumped over Limerick of late into sixth and will see the Youths as there for the taking as the loss to Kildare was the sides’ third in four. Their home confidence seems to be at an all time low, Wallace will be hoping his strikers are more clinical and may look to reinstate youngster Jimmy Keohane to the left wing having been impressive prior to missing the Kildare game. The play-off spots seem to be just a step beyond for this season unless Wexford can bring their away form home.
