A week to remember for Henderson

Waterford United manager Stephen Henderson has had a week to remember at the helm of the Blues. In the league, the Suirsiders picked up a crucial point away to promotion rivals UCD and followed this result up with a 4-1 demolition of Sporting Fingal on Friday night, while in the EA Sports Cup; they secured a semi-final spot on after knocking out Shamrock Rovers.

On Friday night Henderson’s side fought back from a goal down to end Sporting’s nine game unbeaten run in the league. Waterford’s front pairing of Graham Cummins and Willie John Kiely have scored twenty goals in all competitions so far this season and Henderson is full of praise for his front two. “We started slow then as the game progressed, against a very good Fingal team; you have to give credit to our lads especially Willie John Kiely and Graham Cuminns who have been brilliant for us so far this season.”

The win on Friday night saw the Blues go top of the table for the first time this season and Henderson says that this could prove to be a big boost for his team’s confidence. “It’s a big step forwards for the lads in terms of confidence. To go out and beat a top three rival especially Fingal by four goals to one it’s huge”.

The Blues gaffer isn’t getting carried away however as he expects the race for promotion to go down to the wire. “Top spot is going to change a lot until the end of the season. That’s where we are for now but all we can do now is get ourselves prepared for our next game against Wexford Youths.”
