Glasgow book Champions League Quarter-Final place after win over Zurich

Glasgow City sealed their place in the last eight of the UEFA Women’s Champions League after a fantastic 4-2 victory over Zurich.

It looked to be an impossible task with the sides level on 2-2 with 15 minutes left, meaning City needed two goals due to the away goals rule but strikes from Abbi Grant, Leanne Ross, Jo Love and Sue Lappin put them through.

Glasgow City were forced into two changes from the weekend defeat in Zurich. Ross and Grant replaced suspended duo Nicola Docherty and Julie Nelson.

The hosts started the brightest and were causing problems with their pace up front. After a number of dangerous balls across the front of goal, Fiona Brown forced Zurich keeper Seraina Friedli into a good stop.

Both sides had a lot of the ball but couldn’t really take control of the match.

An injury to Zurich attacker Meriame Terchoun and a broken collarbone suffered by City keeper Lee Alexander resulted in a large amount of time added on.

Zurich took the lead in the eighth minute of stoppage time when Cinzia Zehnder stabbed home after a corner.

The second half started much in the same way as the first with neither side in control.

But on 55 minutes City took their chance to equalise. After Emma Black won a free kick on the left hand side, Ross’ delivery was dropped by Friedli and Grant lifted the ball over her from 18 yards.

City got themselves back on level terms in the tie when captain Ross stepped up to slam home a penalty won by Irish midfielder Denise O’Sullivan.

But that didn’t last long as a matter of moments later a mix-up in the City defence allowed Fabienne Humm to stroke home from six yards.

It seemed to get City up for it even more and O’Sullivan went close from 18 yards with a volley before Jo Love fired in a goal similar to the one she scored in the last leg to put City level on aggregate but behind on away goals.

City went in front for the first time in the tie with just four minutes remaining. O’Sullivan was fouled on the left hand side and Ross’ delivery was headed into the net by Eilish McSorley.

City held on to send their fans and players in to massive celebrations.
