Peter spent the first six years of his career in England, playing in Aston Villa's 2002 FA Youth Cup winning side before going on loan to Doncaster Rovers and Cheltenham Town. In the summer of 2004 he was released by Villa and signed briefly for non-league side Tamworth before returning to Dublin where he joined John Gill's Dublin City.

At the end of the 2004 season Peter moved to Dundalk where he made 68 league appearances and scored 16 league goals over the 2005 and 2006 seasons.

He briefly joined Newry City in January of 2007 but one month later he moved to Derry City where registration difficulties due to the 'three clubs rule' hindered his progress. He did make 13 league appearances for the Candystripes but went on loan to UCD in the summer transfer window.

At the end of the '07 seson he moved on again, this time to Dublin club Sporting Fingal and over the 2008 season he made 38 appearances and scored 11 goals.

For 2009 he moved on yet again, this time signing for Dermot Keely at Shelbourne where he scored six goals in 33 league and cup appearances. At the beginning of 2010 he joined Longford Town where he scored six league goals for Tony Cousin's side in 28 league appearances.

In January of 2011, Peter signed for Limerick FC as they attempted to achieve their first promotion in nineteen years. Peter made 24 league appearances, scoring three goals as Limerick fell short, finishing fourth in the First Division.

In December 2011 Peter moved on again, this time signing for Mick Cooke at Drogheda United. Peter played 27 league games for the club and scored seven times as Drogheda finished second in the 2012 league table. He stayed with Drogheda for the 2013 season and managed another 24 appearances, although many were off the bench. He scored twice during the season as Drogheda finished 7th in the league.

In November 2013, Peter joined First Division side Longford Town. He went on to make twenty five appearances during the 2014 season, many from the bench, as Longford Town went on to win the First Division title. He scored one goal in the league, which helped secure a 4-2 win over Cobh Ramblers. Peter left Longford in November 2014 as they prepared for their season in the Premier Division.
