James started his career with Cherry Orchard before signing with Birmingham City in 2006. He spent three years at St Andrews but in 2009 he moved on to Bradford City where he played under Stuart McCall and Peter Taylor and made 25 appearances, scoring two goals.

In July 2010 James made the choice to return home and sign for Pete Mahon a St Patrick's Athletic, making 8 league appearances that season. In 2011 James made just 1 league appearance but also played in St Pats EA Sports Cup games against Shamrock Rovers and Cork City.

In July 2011 James signed for Tony Cousins at Longford Town and made his debut for the club in a 3-1 defeat to Shelbourne at Flancare Park on 13 August. He made 8 league appearances over the latter half of 2011 but failed to make any league appearances in 2012, and left the club in July.

In March 2013 James signed for Roddy Collins at Athlone Town. He missed the first twelve games but came in to play in 13 out of 16 league games, scoring twice, as Athlone Town won the First Division title. James re-signed for Athlone for 2014 season and was an integral part of the squad, playing 30 league games, scoring five goals in the process, as Athlone were relegated at the end of the season.

In December 2014, James followed his manager Keith Long and a few of his Athlone team-mates to join Bohemians. He made 8 league appearances for the club as Bohs finished fifth in the 2015 Premier Division. He left the club at the end of the season and moved to Waterford United in January 2016. James left Waterford at the end of August 2016 to sign for LSL side Bluebell United.

In January 2017 James returned to the League of Ireland when he signed for Owen Heary at Shelbourne.
