Cork City closed the gap to a point on leaders Dundalk winning by the bare minimum in Turners Cross.
Stephen Dooley’s strike on 25 minutes was enough to see Cork claim the three points and get a first home league win over Dundalk under John Caulfield’s management.
Cork City made one change from the side that defeated Longford Town 3-0 in City Calling Stadium last Sunday for this top of the table clash against Dundalk with Kenny Browne returning from injury to take his place at the heart of defence in place of Colin Healy with Michael McSweeney moving to the right.
Dundalk defeated Wexford Youths 3-2 last Sunday and Stephen Kenny made three changes to his side; Paddy Barrett, Stephen O’Donnell and Darren Meenan all came into the starting 11 in place of Sean Gannon, Robbie Benson and John Mountney
Cork had already come out victorious in the two meetings this season between the sides with Cork winning the Presidents Cup match 2-0 in February and the league meeting 1-0 in March.
John Caulfield’s men were psyched up for this clash from the outset contesting every ball with more aggression than the Louth men. O’Donnell fouled Dooley in front of Caulfield and this riled up the large home crowd numbering 5,453.
The game was fast and frantic in marked contrast to the international game played at the same venue on Tuesday night. The atmosphere was getting louder by the minute and the home crowd were soon cheering at their loudest on 25 minutes as they went ahead.
From a Dundalk attack, City broke at pace and Sean Maguire layed the ball off to Dooley who won a foot race against two Dundalk defenders before firing low to the bottom corner of Gary Rogers net with his left foot.
Dooley had Barrett in knots for much of the first half and nearly set up a second on 33 minutes his pass to Beattie couldn’t be directed on target from close range.
Dundalk were living on scraps now and not really threatening the City rearguard and their cause wasn’t helped on 41 minutes when Chris Shields was shown a straight red for a rash challenge on Steven Beattie.
Cork had the upper hand as the first half ended with them in front by the solitary goal. They started the second half in the way they started with Bolger going close from the edge of the box, while Dooley should have doubled his tally moments later but fired the ball over from eight yards.
Brian Gartland fired wide from distance on 63 minutes in what was Dundalk’s first attack of the second half.
On 66 minutes Sean Maguire, who had another brilliant game for Cork was fouled by Andy Boyle. From the resulting penalty Dooley fired the ball high over Rogers’s crossbar into the Shed end.
As the second half wore on, Dundalk started to look more threatening going forward with Ciarán Kilduff holding the ball up front getting the rest of the attacking players into the game. Patrick McEleney fired a free off the wall on 79 minutes while two minutes later Kilduff saw his shot blocked by Browne as City were now under siege from the Dundalk attack.
Gartland was unlucky not to equalise on 89 minutes when his header from close range was stopped at point blank range by Kevin O’Connor with Maguire heading the ball away for another corner. Kilduff fired wide from inside the box as Dundalk kept pressing but City held out to large cheers at the end.
