Derry City's march towards Europe continues after the Candystripes were deserved 1-0 winners over a poor Bohemians at Dalymount Park.
Rory Patterson bundled home his ninth goal of the season with just ten minutes on the goal for what would ultimately prove to be the highlight of an entertaining, if low quality, game.
The hosts had started the game like a team playing for their places in the team, Keith Long having made five changes – two of them enforced – from the team beaten 3-1 in the Dublin Derby last week.
He dropped captain Derek Prendergast and experienced goalkeeper Dean Delany, meaning that there were recalls for Eoin Wearen, Ayman Ben Mohamed and Paddy Kavanagh, while Shane Supple and Ian Morris made their debut and first start respectively.
They created most of the early running, Eoin Wearen just slightly overcooking a pass that would have sent Ismahil Akinade clear, while Akinade used his strength to create another chance to Ger Doherty got out quickly to block.
Kenny Shiels, too, made changes, promoting Josh Daniels and Lukas Schubert to the wing positions, both having made positive contributions from the bench in the 4-0 win over Longford Town.
And it was Daniels who started the move that led to the only goal, finding Aaron McEneff, who played in Conor McCormack to lay it on a plate for the predatory former Northern Ireland international.
Even so, there was an element of luck about it as Patterson's shot seemed to deflect off his standing foot and loop over the helpless and hapless debutant in the Bohemians goal.
Bohemians responded by pouring forward in search of a goal of their own, and after doing well to find himself space in the box, Ismahil Akinade just lacked the finish as he headed wide from Jake Kelly's corner.
And he looked certain to score moments later when Derek Pender swung a magnificent ball into the box from wide on the right, but Niclas Vemmelund – playing in place of the suspended Ryan McBride – did brilliantly to head clear.
And Doherty had to be at full stretch to deny Wearen when the midfielder smashed a shot from 25 yards that the Derryman could only touch over the bar.
Alas it was City who finished the first half stronger, and Patterson should have made it two from Lukas Schubert's cross – after the excellent McEneff had won a 50/50 in the Bohs half – but his header was weak.
And on the stroke of half-time, Barry McNamee had a chance to capitalise on a rare mistake from 38-year-old Dave Mulcahy, but his final pass to the inrushing Daniels was poor and the chance was lost.
The Candystripes emerged for the second half a more cautious side, and despite an array of attacking players Bohemians struggled to create any openings, and the one they did that saw Kelly rustle the net was rightly ruled offside.
There were opportunities on the counter for Derry, and Schubert caught Morris badly out of position before cutting inside and shooting on his right foot, but his effort lacked the power to trouble Supple.
And moments later McNamee found the impressive McCormack on a late surge into the area, but the Carlingford man lacked the required height to get over the ball and steer his header on target.
Long introduced Mark Quigley in place of Kelly, and the substitute should have equalised when he pounced on a poor back-header from Vemmelund, but his attempted lob was well-saved by Doherty.
And McCormack was again at the centre of the action as he was picked out by a low McNamee cross towards the back post, but his acrobatic volley flew just wide to deny what would have been a spectacular goal.
Amazingly, Bohemians should have secured an unlikely, and undeserved, equaliser five minutes into injury time but Morris couldn't sort his feet out quickly enough to tap into an empty net from Ben Mohamed's centre.
