Cobh Ramblers tasted defeat in their first pre-season friendly of 2016 when they lost to Longford Town at a cold and windy St. Colman’s Park.
The visitors scored three goals in five first half minutes as Longford Town exploited defensive mistakes leaving Cobh with a mountain to climb for the remainder of the match. Even though Ramblers battled gamely, they were never going to close the gap as the Premier Division side tacked on another goal in the second period showing the obvious gulf in divisions.
For most of the first half Cobh were on the back foot as Longford got the ball down and played good quick football on a surface that threatened to cut up on numerous occasions. Credit to the grounds men, the pitch easily lasted the full ninty minutes.
Josh O’Hanlon, on loan at Longford Town from Bournemouth, was the stand out player in the game. He showed his attacking intent from an early stage as his header was tipped over the bar by former Town ‘keeper Paul Hunt making his debut for Cobh Ramblers in St. Colman’s Park.
Hunt again excelled moments later diving low at full stretch to tip away a David O’Sullivan shot with Chris McCarthy rescuing Cobh from the rebound diverting a Lee Duffy shot away for a corner.
The home side nearly took the lead against the run of play on 28 minutes when Rob Lehane played a perfectly weighted cut back to Shane O’Connor but the former Ipswich man’s foot got stuck in the turf and the chance went a begging.
This was the catalyst that spurred Longford Town on, to up a gear as they fired three quick goals past a Ramblers side that were the creators of their own downfall.
O’Hanlon scored the first of his brace on 31 minutes dispossessing Kevin Mulcahy on the edge of the box before firing low past Hunt into the net.
Two minutes later Hunt up ended O’Hanlon for a penalty after Kevin O’Connor had played a brilliant through ball. The striker himself fired the ball into the top left hand corner from the spot kick with Hunt going the other direction.
Things got even worse as moments later Graham McCarthy dawdled with possession allowing Duffy to sweep up possession and fire home from a tight angle.
All Cobh could muster in response was a single Lehane shot that Paul Skinner easily saved before both sides headed for the dressing room.
The second half saw both teams make multiple changes and this interrupted the flow of the game, save for an Eoin McGreevy shot that flashed wide nothing of note occurred up until the 67th minute when Cian Fay hit the Town’s fourth of the day.
The substitute scored a superb volley at the end of a flowing move that ended with Kaleem Simon’s cross being smashed in from 12 yards past Eoghan Daly.
Fay could possibly have grabbed a second as the half wore on but was unable to keep his half volley down meaning Longford would only have to settle for the four goal victory.
This game will serve as a wakeup call to Cobh who many are tipping as outsiders for promotion, but they will get the perfect chance to get their pre season back on track next Saturday when they host Cork City in St. Colman’s Park.
