Danny Morrissey scored a dramatic injury time winner for Cork City as they saw off Bohemians 1-0 at Turner’s Cross on Friday night.
The win, Stuart Ashton’s first league match in charge, eases any relegation worries City may have had but it was another worrying loss for Owen Heary’s Bohemians.
Ordinarily this season City are the victims of late winners but they reversed that trend to move to within two points of neighbours Limerick in the middle of the table.
Bohs remain bottom of the league but results elsewhere went their way and they still lie only two points from safety.
The Dubliners looked to have secured a valuable point with keeper Dean Delany pulling off two world-class saves to keep the scores level but Morrissey’s late intervention gave City all three points.
The game took a while to get going with both sides looking short of confidence. City had the first chance when John Dunleavy rose highest to meet Ian Turner’s corner from the left but Delany blocked his header before smothering Dan Murray’s follow-up effort.
The visitors should have opened the scoring in the 13th minute when Conor Murphy played in Karl Moore who outpaced Dan Murray but City keeper Mark McNulty did well to beat away his shot.
Clear cut chances were few and far between and Dinny Corcoran came close just before half-time when he headed over Moore’s corner.
The second half started evenly and Dave Mulcahy, on his return to Cork, was denied by McNulty before Delany produced the first of two wonder saves as he managed to save low to his right from Danny Morrissey’s header.
As the match went on Bohs started to drop deeper and deeper as they looked to hold onto a valuable away point and Delany did brilliantly again to deny Garry Buckley from close range.
Former Irish international Colin Healy was introduced with 22 minutes remaining to try and unlock the visitors’ defence but Owen Heary’s side were defending manfully.
Turner and Gearóid Morrissey were both narrowly off target for City as they chased that elusive first goal and it really looked like it wasn’t their night when Danny Morrissey smacked the post with a volley in the 92nd minute.
Then came the goal. City were piling men forward but Bohemians were clearing everything that came their way until one clearance landed at the feet of Danny Murphy.
The full-back lofted a hopeful ball into the box and Morrissey managed to guide the ball into the far corner to send the home fans wild.
