Stephen played youth football for his local side Mallow United before going to England where he spent three years at Wimbledon.

When Stephen returned from England in 2001 he signed for Cork City where he made 7 league appearances before going to Limerick in 2002. He managed an impressive 28 goals in 58 league appearances on Shannonside before another spell at Cork City that was ruined by injury.

After just one league appearance for Cork, Stephen joined Stephen Kenny at Derry City in 2005 where he bagged nine league goals in 47 appearances over two seasons. Released by new manager, Pat Fenlon, he signed for Tony Cousins at Galway United where he spent 2007 and 2008.

He re-signed for Limerick in the 2009 season, scoring fourteen times in 15 games. In 2010 he went to Northampton Town but he failed to impress cross-channel and returned to Limerick for the remainder of the 2010 season, scoring nine league goals in 16 appearances. Stephen was stung by niggling injuries in 2011 but still managed to score three times in his 10 league appearances.

In February 2012 Stephen signed for Liam Buckley at St Patrick's Athletic. He made his club debut on the opening night of the season against Bray Wanderers and scored his first goal a week later in a 2-0 win over Dundalk. He also scored a crucial 'away' goal in Pats' 2-1 defeat to IBV in the Europa League, but Stephen made just 5 league appearances that season.

In February 2013, not having secured a contract for the approaching season, Stephen retired from League of Ireland football. But in January 2014 he came back to the game, signing for Irish League side Institute FC. In January 2015 Stephen made the move to Belfast club Crusaders.

In January 2018, Stephen joined Ballinamallard United.
