Shamrock Rovers 1 - 0 Wexford Youths

Wed, Feb 27 2013

Shamrock Rovers began their defence of the Leinster Senior Cup with a 1-0 win over First Division side Wexford Youths at Tallaght Stadium on Wednesday night. Ciaran Kilduff scored the only goal of the game on six minutes against a capable Youths side while Reading loanee Karl Sheppard also missed a 13th minute penalty.

Rovers started the game the better, with Sean O'Connor firing a free kick over the bar with just a minute on the clock. The Youths first chance came when striker Dean Broaders headed over from close range. Rovers’ early pressure paid off when a cross field ball from Pat Sullivan found Sean O' Connor down the left hand side. His shot was smartly saved by Doyle who could do nothing to prevent striker Kilduff prodding home from inside the area.

On nine minutes a long ball from Derek Foran almost caught Wexford cold. But goalkeeper Graham Doyle won the race with Rovers’ Shane Robinson. When The Hoops gave away a needless free kick about 30 yards from goal, Joey Mulcahy clipped the ball in and Aidan Keenan headed over from close in.

Sustained possession almost paid dividends for Rovers as Sullivan swept the ball long to Kilduff who should have done better with his header. Then, from a long ball by O'Connor, Sheppard's shot appeared to hit the hand of Thomas Crowe and referee Neil Doyle pointed to the spot. Crowe was booked for the offence but Sheppard’s penalty was smartly saved by Doyle, who also cleared the ball during the goalmouth scramble that ensued.

Wexford’s Craig Wall was booked on 21 minutes for a harsh challenge on Sean O'Connor and from the resulting free kick Robinson fed Sullivan down the right but his fizzing cross evaded everyone. Kilduff then slipped the ball into O'Connor, but his shot was tame, failing to sufficiently test Doyle.

Robinson nearly created a second for the hoops when his ball was almost latched onto by the ever willing Kilduff. Good work from O'Connor, Robinson and Finn created a gap in the Youth's defence but the latter scuffed his shot with time and space.

The first half hour passed off without much luck for Youth's and it was again their Captain Doyle who kept them in the game, this time saving from Ciaran Kilduff when he had looked certain to bag a second.

Wexford's lack of composure in midfield nearly cost a second goal when Craig Wall was caught in possession by Finn, who rocketed a shot against the crossbar. The Youth's nearly forced an opening in the 39th minute but Foran was alert to Dean Broaders’ shot. Finn then cut a ball back for Robinson who blazed over from the edge of the area before O'Connor swung in a corner and Doyle made a reflex save to deny Jason McGuiness.

Wexford created the first half chance of the second half, Broaders forcing a smart catch from Rovers’ keeper Richard Brush. The Youths and particularly Broaders started the half brightly, but it was Keenan who shot inches wide on 47 minutes.

One minute later the Hoops almost scored again but Finn misplaced his pass. Karl Sheppard then outran Youth's full back Shane Clarke but McCabe skied his centre.

Wexford continued to create openings but Broaders lacked a cutting edge after Keenan's cross and Rovers immediately responded with substitute McCabe almost picking out the top corner with an effort from the right side. On 55 minutes McCabe was booked for a cynical foul on Keenan and The Youth's almost made him pay for that when Crowe headed into Brush's grateful grasp.

Trevor Croly's calls of "Keep moving it" were heeded by the Hoops as McCabe floated the ball towards goal, Sheppard forcing another save from Doyle. Brian Nolan was then adjudged to have handled the ball 25 yards from goal and from McCabe's free kick, the ball so nearly found Mark Quigley unmarked in the six-yard box. And Quigley soon brought a smashing save out of the in-form Doyle, his rasping effort tipped around the post.

McCabe and Finn continued to link up well, the latter almost finding McCabe in front of goal, but Clarke intercepted. After 86 minutes McCabe popped up at the edge of the Youths area, playing in Sheppard whose poor night in front of goal continued as he snatched at the shot.

The Hoops dominated the game in truth but Wexford showed they will be a force to be reckoned with in this season's Airtricity League First Division.
