Shamrock Rovers progressed past Athlone Town in the fourth round of the Leinster Senior Cup on Tuesday with a 3-1 win at Lissywoollen. The Hoops in the last three seasons have won this cup twice and finished runners up once so Pat Fenlon, who won the 1996/97 edition of this competition with Rovers, will have been pleased with the victory. The win came thanks to two goals from Shane Hanney and a header from Danny North, with Daniel Purdy scoring an injury time consolation for the Midlanders.
This was a re-fixed match due to a postponement back in February due to a waterlogged pitch and it was another wet night in Athlone. However on this occasion the pitch held up well to the deluge and both sides looked to pass the ball about on the slick surface.
The home side started the strongest and should have taken an early lead from at least one of a trio of chances that came their way in the first ten minutes. In the opening minute they came ever so close to opening the scoring. Daniel Molloy weighted his pass beautifully into the path of Garbhan Coughlan who just has Barry Murphy in goal to beat but he steered his shot well wide. Two minutes later Murphy had to get down nicely to his right to save Sam O'Connor's dipping shot from outside the area.
The final chance in those opening exchanges came after Ian Sweeney set Daniel Molloy free on the left and his whipped cross found the head of Sam O'Connor but he headed wide with the Rovers goal at his mercy.
It was a completely different Hoops team from the one that drew 1-1 away to Limerick in the league last Saturday whereas Eddie Wallace made eight changes to his team from their last game. Rovers brought in a number of their under 19 players into the team and it was one of that number who had the first sight of goal for the Hoops.
It was a lung busting run from Hanney that almost had the Hoops 1-0 up. Gary McCabe turned down the option of Danny North, who looked offside, to scoop the ball over the Athlone defence to the onrushing Hanney. His shot looked like it might nestle in the bottom corner but the ball just skipped wide of the post.
The Hoops began to build some pressure as the Athlone defence were made to work. Daniel Molloy put the ball behind for a Rovers corner after good work from Gareth McCaffrey. McCabe swung it in from the left to North whose header was on target but Patrick Dunican caught it cleanly in front of his face.
North made no mistake with his next headed opportunity. On the half hour mark Marty Waters' cracking cross came to North and he headed home the opener. Eight minutes later, the Hoops had doubled their lead with another assist from Waters. His pass from the left found a free Hanney and he powered home the ball to make it 2-0 at the break.
Shamrock Rovers continued in the same vein in the second period with Gareth McCaffrey going close early in the half. Dunican had to turn the Rovers player’s shot around the post for a corner.
Athlone did look to get forward to get back in the tie. Michael Brown attacking from left back had two attempts on goal but Barry Murphy was equal to the task.
Just after the hour mark his opposite number pulled off a great save to prevent McCabe adding to the vistor’s lead. After that there were few clear cut opportunities until late in the game. Under 19 player Hanney scored his second of the night on 81 minutes to make it 3-0.
In injury time, and against his former club, Daniel Purdy pulled a goal back for the First Division team. It was a sweet strike from the edge of the box to give the home fans something positive to take away from the evening’s entertainment.
