Shane is a native of Dundalk and developed in the club's underage system. He was first called up to the senior squad by manager Jim Gannon in 2005 and made his senior debut in June as a substitute against Galway United at Terryland Park.

He made 17 appearances in his debut season and scored once, in a 2-2 draw with Athlone, but 2006 saw limited opportunities under new boss John Gill. Shane made only one league appearance that year. However, a spate of injuries in 2007 saw Shane make 16 league appearances that year and he remained part of the side that won the First Division title in 2008.

In 2009 Shane signed for Mick Cooke at Monaghan United and was a regular choice in the back four. He made 35 appearances in his first season at Monaghan and played in the 2010 League Cup final against Sligo Rovers.

In 2011 Shane helped Monaghan to promotion, making 29 league appearances for Roddy Collins' side, but in December 2011 he followed ex boss, Mick Cooke, to Drogheda United. The next season was a traumatic one for Shane and in May, having made 11 league appearances, an eight month ban followed a positive test for a prohibited substance. Shane maintained he unknowingly took in the substance MHA in an energy drink, but served his ban and signed a new contract with Drogheda United in January 2013.

Shane played 29 league games for Drogheda in the 2013 as well as appearing in three cup finals, though he ended up on the losing side in all three of the Setanta, EA and FAI Cups. Shane re-signed for Drogheda for 2014 under new boss Robbie Horgan. He was nearly ever-present in the left back position, playing 31 league games during the season as Drogheda finished ninth in the table.

In November 2014, Shane returned to his hometown club Dundalk. He went on to make 4 league appearances for the club as they retained their Premier Division title in 2015 and was an unused substitute in the FAI Cup final victory over Cork City. Again in 2016 Shane made 4 league appearances as Dundalk topped the Premier Division table. Shane departed Dundalk at the end of the 2017 season.

In January 2018, Shane signed for Cliftonville.
