Champions League Final Report: Real Madrid 1 - 1 Atletico Madrid (Real win 5-3 on penalties)

It wasn’t quite like the late drama last time out in Lisbon when these two Madrid clubs met in the Champions League final but it was dramatic all the same as Cristiano Ronaldo’s fifth penalty in the shootout earned Real their 11th European Cup trophy.
The game had ended 1-1 after extratime with players dropping like flies at the end of a long domestic season with another 120 minutes thrown in. Some international managers set for Euro 2016 were likely watching the extratime behind their hands.
The penalties were perfect up until Atleti’s fourth one. Juanfran’s effort came back off the post and coupled with Real’s advantage of going first meant Atletico had more European Cup heartbreak – this the club’s third final defeat.
It was Sergio Ramos’ late goal in Lisbon that broke the hearts of Atletico, taking that final to extratime which Real would comprehensibly win. He hadn’t scored another Champions Final goal since then up until a quarter of an hour into the 2016 final in Milan.
Plan A with Diego Simeone’s team is defend tenaciously, swarm at the opposition and hit on the counter attack. That goal meant they needed to move to plan B but they really struggled to take the game to their city neighbours after going 1-0 down. It took them till towards the end of the first period to really test Keylor Navas defending the goal in the front of his Real supporters.
In the opening five minutes we got to see some of Real’s offensive threats take it to Atleti. Gareth Bale nutmegged Gabi and received the ball back off Ronaldo with a no luck back heeled pass before Bale was taken down. He whipped the cross in with his left and Casemiro’s shot was saved by Jan Oblak.
A minute later Koke had his shot on target at the other end but it was a very weak effort. The game wasn’t being lit up by much goal mouth action but by a series of clattering tackles from both teams which led to a cacophony of noise from the supporters. Only Dani Carvajal made it into referee Mark Clattenburg’s book.
It was with the tiniest of touches that Ramos put Real ahead. Juanfran fouled Bale and the Welshman got a flick on to the resulting freekick from Kroos. Bodies in the way blinded Oblak and so Ramos' intervention was enough to take the ball home for the lead.
The influential Antoine Griezmann was centrally involved in all the Atletico had to offer in the opposition half. His crossfield pass allowed leftback Felipe Luis to run into the corner and his deep cross deserved more than Juanfran’s effort which flew well over the bar.
Five minutes from the break Griezmann worked himself into some space but his effort from 30 yards drilled along the ground was gathered easily by Keylor Navas. The Frenchman’s next shot had the Costa Rican goalkeeper scrambling but it drifted wide of the goal.
The second half was only a minute old when a clumsy challenge by Pepe on Fernando Torres in the box conceded a penalty. Griezmann blasted the penalty off the underside of the crossbar and clearly out so the goalline technology available for this final wasn’t required.
Atletico didn’t allow their heads to drop though and a corner won off substitute Danilo was almost turned home by Stefan Savic but he could only find the side netting. A minute before the hour mark Saul Niguez was given way to much space for Real’s liking in their box but his side footed effort was off target.
On the 70th minute mark, Benzema had a glorious opportunity to double his team’s lead. One-on-one with the ‘keeper bearing down on goal with a diagonal run, he had the option to pass to Ronaldo but shot straight at Oblak instead.
Bale and Ronaldo had two further chances with Bale on 78 minutes taking the ball around Oblak only for Savic to clear. Substitute Yannick Carrasco punished Real for those misses minutes later as he held off Lucas Vazquez in the six yard box to side foot powerfully home Juanfran's beautiful centre from the right.
The Atletico supporters might have feared for a late goal – something that cost them in both Lisbon and also in the 1974 final – but it was their team who finished the strongest. Yet the sides couldn’t be separated in 90 minutes.
Ronaldo looked like he was stuggling in extratime until the ball came near him when suddenly he came to life. Zidane had used all his subs even if he wanted to take off his star player, but he wasn’t likely to do that anyway. The Portuguese player, usually such a good headerer of the ball, made a mess of a chance that came from an early corner in extratime, heading it down against his knee with the ball popping up for Oblak.
A brilliant block by Savic stopped Bale blasting home a second as Real swept forward through Vazquez, with Bale’s lovely dummy allowing Ronaldo free on the left. It was a case of the walking wounded for the second extratime period for Real with Bale reduced to taking up a position centrally but could do little more than a jog.
Simeone meanwhile was able to bring both Thomas Partey and Lucas Hernandez on but they couldn’t press home the advantage of those fresher legs to score. However Hernandez did get tight to Ronaldo to block his shot just before we went into injury time in extratime.
Even clearly struggling after all the action Ramos took Real’s fourth penalty before the Atleti miss allowed Ronaldo to do what he does best and make the story about him. The ball went in, the shirt came off and trophy comes back to the Real side of Madrid.
