FAI Cup Replay: Bohemians 1 - 0 Cork City

Dinny Corcoran’s 39th minute goal was enough to send Bohemians through to the FAI Cup quarter-finals at the expense of Cork City at Dalymount Park on Monday night.
Territorially the first half belonged to the visitors with the majority of the play taking place in Bohemians’ half of the pitch. Cork looked the more balanced side in the opening half hour with their three-man central midfield establishing a solid platform from which to feed the flanks and Mark O’Sullivan’s tireless running up front.
Bohs took longer to get into their stride, failing to generate any real pressure until the latter end of the half, by which time they had lost central defender Daniel Byrne who crumpled to the floor having apparently recovered from a nasty looking knee injury.
Having survived almost constant Cork pressure up until that point the home side suddenly came alive and they opened the scoring after 39 minutes. Roberto Lopes played a ball in from the right that was hit first time by veteran Jason Byrne, but his effort cannoned off a Cork defender only to re-emerge at the back post, where Dinny Corcoran was on hand to nudge the ball past the despairing dive of Mark McNulty.
It was a curious turnaround with Lopes almost having put through his own net on seven minutes when intercepting O’Sullivan’s attempt to play Billy Dennehy in. The Bohs defender had Dean Delany’s impressive reflexes to thank after a quick reaction from the Bohs ‘keeper.
Mark O’Sullivan might also have put Cork ahead after 27 minutes when he had two bites at the cherry. Shooting among bodies from ten yards his first effort was deflected back to him and his second snuck under Delany only to spin to a stop before reaching the goal. Dave Mulcahy sorted things out from there with a no-nonsense clearance.
Both teams might have scored in the six minutes between the goal and the half-time whistle. Delany did well to scoop Billy Dennehy’s low cross away from the inrushing O’Sullivan, while Kevin Devaney fired narrowly wide from twenty yards out just seconds later.
John Caulfield changed things around at the break with City bringing Danny Morrissey on in place of Josh O’Shea, who had a quiet opening half, and reverting to a four man midfield with Morrissey playing in behind striker O’Sullivan.
Bohs started the half well but City created the first chance when Garry Buckley’s powerful shot was beaten away by Delany on 48 minutes after some slick interplay in the buildup. But the home side maintained their momentum and on 54 minutes Corcoran set up Devaney who’s shot from the edge of the area skidded just wide of the Cork goal.
Just before the hour mark City came close once more when a superb through ball set Billy Dennehy on his way and the winger showed electric pace to get through on goal. His attempt to clip the ball over Delany failed but the rebound off the keeper struck Dennehy before cannoning back towards goal and away off the near upright.
The visitors clearly had not lost their sense of purpose and they continued to test Bohs, Dennehy volleying into Delany’s midriff from a Dan Murray cross. But Own Heary’s side created their own chances and Jason Byrne beat his man only to head wide from a fine Derek Pender cross just after the hour.
As the time ebbed away City began to tire and Bohemians assumed more possession. With eleven minutes remaining City switched to 3-5-2 with full back John Kavanagh being replaced by Liam Kearney. Seconds later Gearoid Morrissey almost levelled, Dean Delany pulling off a fine save from the midfielder’s well struck 30 yarder.
With three minutes remaining Dan Murray flicked on a speculative lob forwards and Billy Dennehy raced onto it before thrashing a shot wide of the near post. And in added time Murray was fouled 20 yards out by Lopes, but Delany claimed Colin Healy’s effort from the set-piece.
Despite three minutes of added time there was to be no late escape for the Leesiders this time with Bohemians resolute in the protection of their lead, and it is they who go forward to the quarter-finals while City head back south to concentrate on their continuing interest in the League title.
