FAI Cup Semi Final Report: Shamrock Rovers 1-1 Derry City

- Sun, Oct 05 2014
Shamrock Rovers and Derry will have to face off again on Tuesday at The Brandywell for the right to face St Patrick's Athletic in the FAI Cup Final at The Aviva Stadium after their FAI Ford Cup semi-final finished in a 1-1 draw at Tallaght Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Hoops substitute Dean Kelly thought he had booked The Hoops' place in the FAI Cup final when he netted a 78th minute opener, but City striker Rory Patterson equalised just three minutes from time to send the tie to a replay.
It was Derry who started quicker and could have been in front after just two minutes, as Patrick McEleney slid a ball through for Duffy, but his effort was well saved by Hoops net-minder Barry Murphy.
The hosts had their first chance of Sunday's semi-final when Sean O'Connor picked the ball up on the left and crossed for Karl Sheppard, but the former Reading man headed just wide of Ger Doherty's post.
City winger Duffy could have had a hatrick on Sunday afternoon. This time it was Patterson who put him through one on one, but Murphy was on hand to stifle his efforts once again.
Pat Fenlon's Shamrock Rovers didn't have many chances in the first half, but they could've taken the lead after 39 minutes when Ronan Finn picked up the ball in midfield, before finding Simon Madden who's cross narrowly eluded Sheppard who was lurking six yards out from goal.
The Hoops started the second half the brighter and had their first effort of the half after 53 minutes when Ryan Brennan fired safely over the cross-bar from 25 yards out.
Derry winger Duffy obviously fancied himself on the day and he was next to try his luck from long range, however his effort was collected with ease by Murphy in The Hoops goal.
Ryan Brennan came within inches of heading his side in front with just 18 minutes to go when Madden's cross was flicked towards the midfielder by substitute Kelly, but the ball just evaded the ex-Drog who was diving towards the ball.
The Hoops scored what they thought was the winner with just 12 minutes to go when Simon Madden's cross was cleared only as far as Rovers Striker Kelly who saw his 12 yard effort helped into the net by City shot-stopper Doherty when he really should have saved it.
Just as The Hoops faithful were beginning to dream of an FAI Cup final at The Aviva Stadium Derry Striker Patterson rose highest to head home a Mark Timlin corner and send the Candystripes faithful wild.
City midfielder Duffy had a great chance to send Peter Hutton's side through to the final in the dying embers of the game when Patterson eased Jason McGuinness off the ball, before playing the ball across goal for the 20 year old, but his shot was excellently saved by Murphy.
