Sporting Fingal recorded their first ever win against Bohemians FC as they beat their North Dublin rivals 2-0 in the quarter finals of the Leinster Senior Cup at Dalymount Park.
It was a mixture of youth and experience on show as Glen Crowe started up front on his own for Sporting Fingal, and it was obvious from the start that they were going to sit back and try catch Bohemians on the counter attack.
It was the home side who dominated the early possession and some good passing led to the first real chance which fell to Gary Burke but his tame shot was easily saved by Sporting Fingal’s goalkeeper, Darren Quigley.
Bohemians continued to put the pressure on and in the seventh minute they thought they had scored when a goal mouth scramble resulted in Kevin Boyd clearing off the line for the visitors. Bohemians players appealed to referee Thomas Connelly but nothing came off it.
Three minutes later Gary Burke should have scored when he went clear but his shot was brilliantly saved by the in-form Quigley. Sporting Fingal struggled to create any chances and Glen Crowe found it hard to get involved, with the Bohemian defenders easily cutting out any service the Fingal midfield tried to give up to him.
Sporting Fingal tried other routes and it was the ever present Conan Byrne who slipped past the Bohemians defence in the 22nd minute to whip in a dangerous cross but it was cleared away.
The home side went close again but Aaron Greene couldn’t finish from a tight angle and saw his shot saved by Quigley.
Bohemians were probably going into the dressing room at half-time wondering how they weren’t ahead with Sporting Fingal looking like a side who had no intention of creating any chances for themselves. Their best attacking option came from Keith Quinn their left-back who occasionally ran at the Bohemians defence and he nearly created the goal that broke the dead lock when he dribbled in the box and crossed it into the front post were Crowe saw his flick saved by Barry Murphy.
Liam Buckley, Sporting Fingal’s manager made changes at half-time bringing on Eamon Zayed for Conan Byrne and Mark Towney for Alan Kirby. It was Zayed who made the difference and in the 58th minute he got the right wing to put in a cross which was met by the head of Shane Barrett.
After taking the lead Sporting Fingal grew in confidence and kept the ball and better possession to the displeasure of the home crowd. Pat Fenlon changed his side’s formation and went with three up front to try snatch an equaliser and Greene should have gotten it in the 81st minute when a brilliant pass by Burke gave him a glorious opportunity but once again Quigley made the point blank save.
Bohemians pressed and threw players forward but were made to pay in the 86th when Kevin Dawson collected the ball from the half way line and ran into the home side’s box to slot home to finish the tie off and book Sporting Fingal’s place in the semi-finals of the Leinster Senior Cup. Glen Crowe had the chance to put the icing on the cake with the last kick of the game but was denied when his shot was saved by Barry Murphy.
