Stephen joined Bohemians from Belvedere boys in July 2009. He played for the club's A Championship side in 2009 and 2010, making his league debut on the opening day of the 2011 season in a 3-1 away win over Bray Wanderers.

Stephen became a first team regular over the 2011 season, making 28 league appearances. He scored one league goal in his debut season, in a 2-1 away win over Sligo Rovers in April, but he also hit the net in Bohs 3-0 win over Cork side Douglas Hall in the third round of the FAI Cup.

Stephen played 16 times in the league for Bohemians in 2012 and then made another 19 league appearances for Bohs in 2013. He re-signed for Owen Heary's Bohemians for the 2014 season. He made just 5 league appearances before leaving Bohemians in July 2014 to finish his course in college. In January 2015 Stephen joined LSL side Kilbarrack United.
